From personal trauma to product launch
Howard first developed tinnitus in 2014 after playing guitar at a band rehearsal that was too loud. He went to bed that night with a high-pitched ringing in his ears - which never stopped.
He saw a doctor, who said he would just have to live with it. He then tried CBT, acupuncture, hypnotherapy, hearing aids and medication. He even joined a medical trial and had 6 injections through both eardrums… which didn’t work.
In 2019 Howard’s tinnitus worsened after a high-speed windsurfing crash, which left him needing life-saving surgery and 18 months of rehabilitation. Find out how he overcame the odds and recovered to make TinniSoothe a reality.
Sound therapy for day-and-night relief.
Quiet moments were the worst. The only thing that gave Howard any relief was turning on a TV, listening to music or using some kind of white noise to distract him from the tinnitus.
Known as sound enrichment, this is a common self-help technique for managing tinnitus. But switching devices on and off all the time was not very practical, and not always possible. He needed to find a better way to manage the transitions between noise and quiet, when tinnitus would spike.
In 2018, Howard had an idea. He started developing a tiny, wearable white noise device to provide constant relief - and without anything blocking the ears.
The result is TinniSoothe.

The development of TinniSoothe
Innovation from inspiration
Since that moment of inspiration, the team here at TinniSoothe have developed numerous prototypes, tirelessly testing and improving all aspects of the device. The aim has always been clear - to make an easy-to-use and effective device that can be discreetly worn throughout the day and bring relief at night.
It may sound simple, and essentially it is. Simplicity drove the design. Many years of prototyping have made the user experience as seamless as it can be, so you don’t have to give it a second thought. Get up, put it on in the morning … and go about your day.
After years of prototyping, we were granted UK Patent GB2576223. And it doesn’t end here. We’ll continue to innovate and develop, to improve the lives of all those people struggling with tinnitus.
Invented in Britain,
Made in Britain.
Howard Presland (centre) came up with the original idea for TinniSoothe, based on his own experience of chronic tinnitus.
Joined by his brother Lloyd (left) and good friend Jez Lawson (right), they have worked for over 6 years to bring TinniSoothe to life – and we continue to work tirelessly to achieve the best results for the tinnitus community.
Meet Our Clinical Advisory Board
In 2025 we launched our Clinical Advisory Board to bring together respected clinicians across audiology, psychology, and hearing care. As independent advisors to TinniSoothe, their insight helps to shape our research strategy, guide our innovation, and strengthen our support for the tinnitus community.
