Everyone Knows Someone Struggling with Tinnitus
At TinniSoothe™ , as we’ve progressed through our journey in bringing a practical, 24/7, off-the-shelf tinnitus relief device to market over the last few years, we’ve learnt a lot about tinnitus and the treatment of tinnitus. One of the key things that has continuously shocked us is the number of people who we’ve chatted with who are either suffering themselves or know someone suffering and praying one day for a tinnitus cure.
I guess this is unsurprising given that the British Society of Audiology expect nearly 8 million people in the UK alone to have the condition by 2028. That’s a lot of people looking for an answer as to how to stop tinnitus! More concerningly, a 2021 British Tinnitus Association survey showed that about 10% of people with persistent tinnitus had experienced suicidal thoughts since being diagnosed. At today’s stats, that’s nearly 900,000 people in the UK! And the chances are that many have not shared their suffering with you.
Some of the people we’ve spoken to have had it for 20 years, some have developed it recently - and everything in between. We’ve spoken to musicians, construction workers, soldiers, DJ’s, perimenopausal women, motor sport enthusiasts and primary teachers amongst others. The one thing that they all have in common - apart from their appetite for tinnitus relief - is that this is a condition that affects their daily lives. Tinnitus can have a multitude of impacts that vary from mildly irritating to causing difficulty concentrating, sleep deprivation, fatigue, anxiety and depression. Coming from a chronic sufferer of 8 years, it’s a life-changing condition that I wish I’d have known about before the band rehearsal that led to my discovery.
One of the greatest challenges is the mystery that surrounds the condition - both the definitive medical explanation, the quantifiability of the condition, the uniqueness of the symptoms and the effectiveness of the many treatments out there. What is known is that there can be many causes and whilst hearing loss and loud noise exposure are widely recognised as the biggest risk factors, it can also be caused by head / neck injuries, circulation issues or as a side-effect of certain medications. One of the other challenges is that there is no cure - regardless of what sufferers may read across a wide variety of websites promising miracles.
At TinniSoothe, we’ll be releasing several blogs over the coming months. We’ll try to help educate around the condition, explain what it’s like, how you can avoid getting it or making it worse and how TinnisSoothe might help.
One of our company values is ‘honesty’. We don’t have a cure for tinnitus. But we do believe we have a unique proposition that will bring relief to some of the sufferers out there.
Everyone knows someone suffering from tinnitus - why not let them know in case we can help them?
